About the Role
A bar back is a support staff member who works behind the scenes in a bar or nightclub, assisting the bartenders and other staff to ensure that everything runs smoothly. The main responsibilities of a bar back include:
- Maintaining a clean and organized bar area
- Stocking the bar with supplies, such as ice, glasses, and mixers
- Preparing ingredients for drinks, such as cutting fruit and making simple syrups
- Running drinks and supplies to the bartenders
- Keeping track of inventory and placing orders as needed
- Assisting with opening and closing duties
- Keeping the ice bin filled and the glassware clean
- Ensuring compliance with safety and sanitation regulations
- Assisting the bartenders during busy times

To be a successful bar back, you should have a strong work ethic, be able to multitask, and be able to work well under pressure. Additionally, a bar back should have good organizational skills, and the ability to lift and carry heavy items. A high school diploma is usually required for this role. Prior experience in the food service industry is preferred but not always required, some employers may provide training for this role.
